On June 20, 1782, the Second Continental Congress made the bald eagle the national emblem of the United States and placed its image on the Great Seal. Two hundred years later in 1982, June 20 was declared National Bald Eagle Day, and today many states continue to use the day to honor one of America’s most enduring patriotic symbols.
I have become VERY INVOLVED in observing a particular bald eagle family the last couple of months. The nest is visible “live” via EagleCam from sun up until 8:15 PM each day (Pacific time). This particular eagle family lives on Santa Cruz Island (part of the Channel Islands north of Los Angeles).
The picture above is “K-10″ and “K-26″. They are a very famous eagle couple. “K-10″ is the “best” bald eagle dad ever. He is so patient with “A-63″ and not only a great fisherman but an excellent fowl/rodent hunter. The other picture is of “K-26″ (mom) and “A-63″ (baby). Of course, “A-63″ doesn’t look like this anymore.
He/she is about 9 weeks old and is getting ready to fly away from the nest soon. I call “A-63″ he/she because the DNA test has not come back yet.
If you are interested in seeing the baby eagles BEFORE they fly the coop, you had better check it out quickly. Here are some links to the Bald Eagle sites that I frequent.
